Seventh (7th) SESSION ON THURSDAY 18th May 2017

This is the second series of workshops with a theme of “Inter-disciplinary Maritime Practice” (IMP), which is jointly organized by The Hong Kong Logistics Management Staff Association (HKLMSA), C.Y. Tung International Centre for Maritime Studies, PolyU (ICMS) and the Hong Kong Seamen Union (HKSU). It employs the same methodology and format like the IMP Workshop Series I of 2014, which was conceived to cover the entire lifespan of a ship, from the decision to purchase to its final loss or scrapping, and to provide a platform for eminent professionals from the Hong Kong Maritime Industry to share their expertise and valuable experience with fellow professionals, young entrants in particular, in the shipping fraternity of the Greater China Region, in interactive sessions of Q&A discussions.

The Seventh Session of the IMP Workshop Series II is on MARINE INSURANCE with focus on the risks covered as Hull & Machinery, Protection & Indemnity, Offshore Units and Specialized Vessels.

Guest moderators for this 7th Session will be Mr. Sid Lock and Mr. Thorbjorn Emmanuelson from Gard (HK) Ltd.

INTER-DISCIPLINARY MARITIME PRACTICE WORKSHOP SERIES II

THIRD (3rd) SESSION ON THURSDAY 19th JANUARY 2017

This is the second series of workshops with a theme of “Inter-disciplinary Maritime Practice” (IMP), and is jointly organized by The Hong Kong Logistics Management Staff Association (HKLMSA), C.Y. Tung International Centre for Maritime Studies, PolyU (ICMS) and the Hong Kong Seamen Union (HKSU). This IMP Series II (2) will follow the same methodology and format like the IMP Workshop Series I launched in January 2014, which was conceived to cover the entire lifespan of a ship, from the decision to purchase to its final loss or scrapping, and designed to provide a platform for eminent professionals from the Hong Kong Maritime Industry to unreservedly share their view and valuable experience with those professionals, young entrants in particular, in the shipping fraternity of the Greater China Region. IMP S1 was conducted in interactive and mind-provoking sessions, the value of which was clearly endorsed by most of the participants who requested incessantly for the repeat of a similar programme for months after the completion of IMP S1 December 2015. Responding to such earnest requests, the IMP Committee, have through its relentless efforts, succeeded in re-introducing an innovative, educational and interesting programme in IMP S2, in monthly 2.5-hour workshop sessions commencing on 29th November 2016.

The Third Session of the IMP Workshop Series II is on the topic of PROJECT MANAGEMENT & SHIPBUILDING. The Project Management will be based on the model of an Offshore Wind Energy project in the Greater China Region, and the various related maritime fields, viz., construction of specialized vessels and port facilities etc. The Shipbuilding will look at the practical issues faced in Shipbuilding Contracts and related areas.

“An Inspiring Odyssey”

INTER-DISCIPLINARY MARITIME PRACTICE WORKSHOP SERIES II

SECOND (2nd) SESSION ON THURSDAY 15th DECEMBER 2016

This is the second series of workshops with a theme of “Inter-disciplinary Maritime Practice” (IMP), and is jointly organized by The Hong Kong Logistics Management Staff Association (HKLMSA), C.Y. Tung International Centre for Maritime Studies, PolyU (ICMS) and the Hong Kong Seamen Union (HKSU). The Second Session of the IMP Workshop Series II is on the topic of FINANCING and SHIPPING & RELATED PROJECTS with focus upon the sourcing of funds and structured financings for the contemplated investments on the Offshore Wind Energy projects in the Greater China Region, particularly to the maritime part, viz., construction of specialized vessels and port facilities. This session is a response to the analytical presentation on the Offshore Wind Energy given on 29th November 2016.

Inter-Disciplinary Maritime Practice (IMP) Workshop

In January 2014, the ICMS launched the Workshop Series on Inter-Disciplinary Maritime Practice (IMP), in collaboration with the Institute of Seatransport and the Hong Kong Logistics Management Staff Association. The workshops covered the entire lifespan of the ship, from the decision to purchase to its final loss or scrapping. Topics included Decision Making in Ship Acquisition, Financial Options for Ship Acquisition, Sale & Purchase and New Building of Ships, Ship Types, Machineries & Equipment, Management of Ships & Ship Managers, Professional Services in Maritime Practice, Ship Employment, Chartering & Administration, Ship Operations, Crewing, Technical Maintenance& Agency, Marine Insurance (Hull & Machinery, Protection & Indemnity), Disputes & Casualty Management (Legal & Commercial).

Panel of moderators and guests for the IMP Workshop on Marine Insurance on 3 December 2015, the last one of the 12-session series.

Experts and professionals on the above topics formed a panel to present cases and exchanged views with the audience who mainly came from the industry. The moderators were Mr. Raymond T.C. Wong (王德超), who has 47 years of experience in average adjusting and after qualifying by examination in 1980, became the first Chinese Fellow of the British Association of Average Adjusters, Mr. Cho Hor Wong (黃祖河), who is a Logistics & Projects Consultant and had served as a Director of the Charterers P&I Club and Mr. Manson Cheung (張迅文) who is a Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators, The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and an Accredited Mediator of HKIAC and has the experience in different sectors of shipping. Guest speakers were invited to share their experiences on different topics. Twelve IMP workshops, each of which lasted for two and a half hours, were held with a total attendance of 650.

PART II – MARINE INSURANCE: ON DECEMBER 3, 2015 THURSDAY

The turnout rate for the Part I of Marine Insurance on November 5, 2015 was encouraging, and the feedback from the attendees overwhelmingly positive. The IMP Workshop Organizing Committee derives great satisfaction in seeing how the IMP Workshop Series has contributed to many in the shipping fraternity of the Greater China Region over the past 21 months.

For those who have already registered for the Part II of the “Marine Insurance” Workshop, please take this as a gentle reminder for the 12th and last IMP Workshop in the present series, which will be held on December 3, 2015 at Poly University. We are excited that you will be there again.

“SWING ALL THE WAY THROUGH”

EVENING WORKSHOPS ON 5TH NOVEMBER AND 3RD DECEMBER 2015 (BOTH ON THURSDAY)

The series of workshops with a theme of “Inter-disciplinary Maritime Practice” (IMP) is the brainchild of three institutions in Hong Kong, namely, Institute of Sea Transport (IST), The Hong Kong Logistics Management Staff Association (HKLMSA), C.Y. Tung International Centre for Maritime Studies, PolyU (ICMS) with a view to providing a platform for some movers and shakers from the Hong Kong Maritime Industry to unreservedly share their view and valuable experience with those whose careers and professions are in the shipping fraternity of Greater China Region. IMP Program was structured to cover the entire life-span of a ship, from the decision to purchase to its final loss or scrapping. The mode of workshops is based upon case- study format, with guest-speakers being invited to share their view and valuable experience, be it good or bitter, in specific issues. It is intended to be a very proactive educational workshop. IMP managed to successfully deliver 10 workshops for the last 20 months since 9th January 2014 with topics as follows :

Time flies. IMP Workshop is now coming towards the end of its journey. The topic for the IMP’s last workshops (the 11th & 12th), which will be a two-day event to be held on November 5, 2015 (Part I) and December 3, 2015 (Part II) respectively, is “Marine Insurance (H&M & P&I) & Disputes & Casualty Management (Legal & Commercial)”. The focus of Part I shall provide the participants a broader value-perception of marine insurance and an insight on the mechanism in the process of insurance procurement. The gist of Part II will be an open-discussion on the analysis of claims of different nature where the claims practitioners on the panel can freely share with the participants from the floor their respective experience in issues such as (but not limited to): reasonable cost of damage repairs under insurance on Builders’ Risks, the effect of the Tender Clause, termination of SCOPIC, having signed 2 LOFs, limitation of collision liability, claims arising from wear and tear, cargo declining to contribute to General Average, who pays various charges following total loss of vessel – wreck removal, forwarding of cargo to destination, repatriation of crew…, notice of abandonment (a) of vessel and (b) of voyage, damage by pirates using weapon, barratry followed by capture, claim for consideration of Underwriters, …… You name it !!! Questions and views from all participants are most welcome.

We believe that this 2-day workshop will be able to help you jumpstart your knowledge on marine insurance to a certain extent.
